PBIS

Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three tiered framework to improve and integrate all the data and practices affecting student outcomes every day.

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, Restorative Practices, Social Emotional learning and other district Initiatives work better when PBIS is implemented with fidelity.

PBIS creates schools where all students succeed.

The first tier, Universal Supports, is effective for approximately 80% of students and focuses on school-wide procedures and common areas. Tier II, Selected Supports, in combination with Tier I, is effective for approximately an additional 15% of students for whom Tier I alone was not effective. Tier II focuses on small group and class-wide strategies. Tier III focuses on individual, one-to one instruction.

Three Tiers of Support

  • The TFI gives teams a single, efficient, valid, reliable survey to guide implementation and sustained use of SWPBIS. Using the TFI, teams measure the extent to which school personnel apply the core features of SWPBIS at all three tiers – either individually or collectively. Schools may take the TFI as:

    • An initial assessment to determine if they are using
    • A guide for implementation of Tier I, Tier II, and/or Tier III practices
    • An index of sustained SW-PBIS implementation

Effective PBIS implementation depends on meeting regularly, analyzing data, and revisiting the PBIS Continuous Improvement Cycle.
