MISSION

Our mission is to provide the pre-service teacher the space and opportunity to learn about teaching and learning, apply newly acquired knowledge, theories, strategies and models in a variety of contexts within a classroom thus building our teacher candidates pool in order to hire quality teachers who have experience in the SAISD way.

COVID PROTOCOLS:

School Safety procedures:  Safe School Start (saisd.net)

SAISD is no longer under a mask mandate but it is highly encouraged

STUDENT OBSERVERS

Students preparing for their field experience (observation) hours will work through their University/College or Alternative Certification Program (ACP) for placement.  The university/college/ACP will contact Program Manager to find such placement.

All field experience students will need to apply for a placement on the Careers website: San Antonio Independent School District - Frontline Recruitment (applitrack.com).  Apply to "Pre-Service Teacher".  This is not for employment but for placement at our campuses and to get a background check.  The consent form will be sent to you via email.

CLINICAL TEACHING

Students preparing to do their clinical teaching will apply for clinical teaching through their University/College or Alternative Certification Program (ACP).  Once they have met all requirements to participate in the clinical teaching, their name will be submitted to the Program Manager to find a placement that matches their certification area.  The University will inform the Clinical Teacher of their placement once it has been confirmed with the Cooperating Teacher, the Principal, and the University Director.

All clinical teachers will need to apply for a placement on the Careers website: San Antonio Independent School District - Frontline Recruitment (applitrack.com).  Apply to "Pre-Service Teacher".  This is not for employment but for placement at our campuses, to obtain a SAISD email address and to get a background check.  The consent form will be sent to you via email.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR CLINICAL TEACHERS

We have job opportunities for eligible students interested in working as a clinical teacher at our campuses during their last year of study (observe in fall/clinical teach in spring).  Currently, we offer two residency opportunities:
1.  Clinical Teaching Intern - this position takes the place of an Instructional Assistant vacancy - for those students interested in these two areas especially:  EC-6 and Special Education--$12,500/semester, full-time
2.  Clinical Teaching Resident - this position is a paid clinical teaching experience --$10,000/semester, part-time.  This is grant funded, which means we will provide this opportunity until the grant expires.
- To qualify you must be getting certified in a high need area (Bilingual, SPED or placed in an IB school).  This may change, so it is best to consult your university.

The Program Manager and University partners will inform students of this opportunity when placement requests are made.  These year-long positions begin in accordance to the SAISD Instructional Calendar, including Staff Development week prior to the first day of school.

Clinical Teachers can also apply for a Substitute position one month prior to the end of their clinical teaching placement, on the condition that they have fulfilled the University requirements and their clinical teaching hours.  All clinical teachers need to apply on the Careers website: San Antonio Independent School District - Frontline Recruitment (applitrack.com).  Apply to "Clinical Teaching Intern" positions.

Our current partners for the internships are Our Lady of the Lake University, Texas A&M-San Antonio, Texas State University, University of Incarnate Word, and the University of Texas-San Antonio.

FAQs

The student observer is the student working on their field experience 1 and 2 semesters getting acquainted with the classroom and students.  This student will be observing in the classroom between 2-4 hours per week.

The clinical teaching student is the student who is ready to teach the students in a classroom.  The first few weeks of school the student will get acquainted with classroom students, observe the cooperating teacher and assist in small group and planning.  Midway through the semester, the clinical teacher moves to leading the classroom in instruction with the cooperating teacher there in a supporting role.

The Clinical Teaching Intern position is a full-time, paid position that the undergraduate student assumes at any one of our campuses.  The Intern still needs a cooperating teacher to be matched with in the same certification area the student is seeking.  The idea is that the Intern mirrors the cooperating teacher's daily routine.  Since they are still undergraduate students, they still need to abide by the clinical teaching requirements and be given the opportunity to lead teach in the classroom.  This position IS NOT an hourly position.  They are salaried, exempt. benefits positions.

The Clinical Teaching Resident position is a part-time, paid position for those that are placed at our campuses for clinical teaching.  Nothing changes with your placement - it's just a paid clinical teaching experience.  This position is salaried, part-time, non-benefits eligible.
