School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)
What is the SHAC?
The SAISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group created of Board-appointed individuals representing the SAISD community. The majority of the group’s members are parents; the council may also include health care professionals, students, educators, and administrators. This advisory group recommends policies, procedures, strategies, and curricula that contribute to a healthy and positive impact on student learning.
Why the SHAC?
Under state law, every school District is required to appoint a SHAC to ensure that local community values are reflected in the district's health education instruction. District policies related to amount and level of physical activity required; vending machine and food service guidelines; policies and procedures that prescribe penalties for the use of e-cigarettes and tobacco products by students; and request in writing their child’s physical fitness assessment results at the end of the school year can be found in the Parent-Student Handbook.
